You need to know where you’re going in life and in business, to find your Future State. If you don’t, you’ll never get anywhere…you’ll just spin in circles and wonder why you’re not making any moves or improvements.
Don’t just sit and spin!
There are days when I just sit and spin and get so overwhelmed that I can’t make anything happen. It’s at these times when I have to think about where I want to go in my business and life. I have to find the possibilities I’ve created, that Future State I’m working towards, and push through the smoke.
It’s the same with your processes. Where do you want them to be? Efficient, smooth, easy.
Envisioning the Future State
When you start out by thinking about what you want something to look like, you have a direction to move forward in. You don’t get lost in the valley of “decision overwhelm”. You know you want it to be blue, so you stop looking at green and purple. Decisions get easier because you know what you want the outcome to look like.
Start with asking yourself:
- Why are you doing this?
- What do you want from this process? / What do you want your customer to have/know from this process?
- How do I get from here to there?
- How do you know you’ve arrived?
These are the simple overarching questions that a process answers. Just by answering these questions you’ll have started to document your business.
You’ll build the road map to your business one process at a time. AND, when you find yourself spinning in circles, doing donuts and kicking up all the smoke, you’ll be able to find that road out to your destination.
