Start Documenting Your Business

It’s always difficult to know where to start. There are so many things to do, so many paths you can take that it becomes overwhelming.

The best place to start with is where you are now. What are the things you’re currently doing and working towards?

If you start with where you are and what you’re working on now, the rest will fall into place in a somewhat logical fashion.

  • What are you currently working to accomplish?
  • What is the main avenue for income?

Once you get the main items documented, you’ll be able to branch out into other areas.

Start simple

Create the high-level overview, the generic path that will be followed. How will you

  • Attract,
  • Engage,
  • Recruit,
  • Onboard,
  • Deliver,
  • Satisfy

your customers?

This may feel counterintuitive by not getting detailed, but it will give you the boundaries within which you will be working. It gives you a way to limit “scope creep”. You’ll identify a lot of things, but if they don’t fit within the boundaries, write them down and put them aside for later.

It’s important to get your core processes and systems in place to ensure that your customers are being taken care of effectively and efficiently. Once that is complete, you can begin to define the supporting, but not directly involved areas.

Write Down What You Do

One way to get started is to just write down everything you do. It doesn’t have to be in order, just keep a running list of the tasks you perform as you perform them. This will give you something to look back on when you sit down to begin determining your systems.

This list will remind you of those small items that are easily forgotten when someone asks, “What do you do?” Don’t you hate it when someone asks that question and your mind goes BLANK?!? Such a strange phenomenon.
