Celebrating Failures as Learning Opportunities

Celebrating failures may seem counterintuitive, but by reframing mistakes and setbacks as learning experiences you’ll start to look at them as stepping stones along the path.

It’s like learning your ABCs and 123s. Each letter and number was hard to master and you probably got the backwards sometimes. But with each try you got to see what happened.

You had the opportunity to look at the example and what you did to see where opportunities were to improve… “OH! I have to move my hand THIS way, not that way!” or as Hermione would say, “It’s Levi-OOHH-sah, not Levi-oh-SAHH!

Why Celebrating Failures Matters

Each “failure” is the result of an experiment .Put these things together and see if it explodes or not. If it does, you learn not to put those things together…unless you want an explosion. 😊

Each person or company that we know today went through multiple failures before they hit the right combination of things to make what they were wanting happen.

Heinz went through 46 iterations before they hit magical 47! WD-40 had, you guessed it, 39 previous failures before their magical win. And I wonder how many rocket ships exploded before one made it to space? Talk about time and money failures! 🫢

How Failures Create Breakthroughs

Yet each “mistake” was celebrated because those people learned what didn’t work and what needed to be improved. They took those failures as lessons and opportunities to iterate into something better. And now we have people LIVING in space for 6 months to a year! 😮

I once saw a glass maker give a demonstration and as he was making the handle for the pitcher, a glob of molten glass got out of hand and did something strange. His response? “Well, that just added $100 to the price!”

What a GREAT celebration of a mistake. He didn’t throw the piece on the ground and curse his inability to do what he intended. He looked at the beauty of the “mistake” and saw that it added value to the piece.

Find the Value in Your Mistakes

Each mistake you make, each failure you have, just adds value to your journey. Celebrate the learning. Take a look at what happened. Perhaps it wasn’t really a mistake but a divine inspiration that breaks you out of the mold and sends you in a new direction…one you would have never thought of.

Each innovation that has ever been, has come from a mistake or a failure when trying to do something BIG. What will your innovation be? What amazing things will come from the mistakes and failures you have in life?
