Celebrate Small Wins, Build Confidence and Momentum

Progress happens in the small moments, the micro-baby steps. And when you can celebrate those small achievements, you anchor in the momentum, confidence, and belief in yourself.

I recently started roller skating again after way too many years. I went to the rink thinking that I’d be able to get up and do all the spins and tricks I used to do when I was 15. But when I stood up on the skates for the first time, my legs didn’t know what to do. They shook and wobbled wondering what the heck I thought I was doing! I sat back down again…quickly!

I started wondering what the point was and if I should take the skates off and go home. In that moment, I decided that I wanted to skate again because I had so much fun before and I wanted to recapture that again.

But I had to come to terms with current reality and give myself some grace.

I am not that young girl anymore. My body has changed after 2 children and a sedentary lifestyle. There’s more to go around and to balance on these little wheels! 😜 My muscles haven’t been used in this manner in quite a while. So, I needed to build slowly and give myself some grace and compassion.

Why It Matters to Celebrate Small Wins

These same steps are what everyone goes through when starting something new, or old, before becoming a confident, skillful, competent being.

  1. Get your legs: This is building a strong foundation for whatever you’re building to stand on. Stand up, test your strength, sit down, rest, and try again … until you can stand without shaking to badly. Celebrate this small win! You STOOD UP!!!
  2. Venture out a little bit: Start to maneuver the sidelines of your environment a little bit. Don’t go too far and give yourself plenty of time to rest, adjust, and try again. Stay close to home base where there’s safety until you feel a little more comfortable with the way things move around. Celebrate this small win! You MOVED around the environment!
  3. Step onto the field: This is where bravery comes into play. Hold onto the wall as you put one foot out and then the next foot. Notice the difference between the sidelines and the playing field. The floor is slicker and the folks around you are moving faster. Take it slow and get used to the differences. Move forward a little bit, then step back off and rest. Repeat this until you have some more strength and confidence. Celebrate this small win!! You GOT ON THE FIELD!
  4. Expand your reach: Try to go further. Try to go a little faster. Try a new, more intermediate environment. You may find that you’re not quite ready for it yet, but you’ll have the experience of what it looks like. This gives you the level marker to work towards. Work your way from one round to two rounds to five rounds and more. When you feel as though you’re one of the best in your current environment, you’ll know it’s time to step up. CELEBRATE this win! You’ve come so far from that person who couldn’t even stand up before!
  5. Continue expanding your reach: Each small win levels you up. Put enough small wins together and soon you’ll be able to hold your own with confidence and excitement! Celebrate ALL the wins! You are learning and leveling up!

Celebrate Small Wins to Build Confidence

Sometimes just standing up is all you can do and seeing yourself out there, skate dancing, looks like some far off dream that’s unobtainable. When you treat each micro-baby step with the joy and excitement it deserves, the learning becomes fun and a little bit easier.

Each step along the way is worthy of celebration. Just as we do with babies, each babble of noise that sounds like a word, the moment they roll over or get on their knees, the first step they take…those are all HUGE milestones. Even though we walk every day we still celebrate their first success at this ‘mundane’ thing.

Celebrate Small Wins and Keep Moving Forward

You are worth celebrating. The effort you put forth, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. It doesn’t have to be big and elaborate, just a simple 10-Second Bootie Wiggle™ is enough. Just a smile and a pat on your own back is enough.

When you begin celebrating progress as it happens, something powerful shifts inside you. Instead of waiting for some distant finish line, you start seeing the courage, effort, and growth that are happening right now. Those small wins build confidence, create momentum, and strengthen your belief that your BIG Dream really is possible.
