Celebrating Your Progress to Build Confidence
Celebrating your progress, even the smallest victories, can do wonders for your self-confidence. Whatever actions you take after an achievement, you provide some kind of stimuli. This can be negative, positive, or apathetic. Your body reacts differently to each stimulus by either being motivated, averse, or indifferent.
The Science Behind Celebrating Your Progress
In the scientific white paper entitled Dopamine in motivational control: rewarding, aversive, and alerting, by Bromberg-Martin, Matsumoto, and Hikosaka, the authors simplified a hypothesis in the statement “neurons that fire together wire together, as long as they get a burst of dopamine.”

“Conventional theories of Dopamine (DA) reward signals. DA neurons encode a reward prediction error signal, responding with phasic excitation when a situation’s reward value becomes better than predicted (red) and phasic inhibition when the value becomes worse than expected (blue). These signals could be used for learning, to reinforce or punish previous actions (backward arrows) or for immediate control of behavior, to promote or suppress reward-seeking actions (forward arrows).” Bromberg-Martin, Matsumoto , and Hikosaka
How Dopamine Shapes Motivation and Confidence
This basically means that, if you ensure that you give yourself a little bit of “feel good” when you have done something, no matter how big or small, you start to create connections within your brain. The more you “wire together" those particular neurons, the easier it is to travel down that highway. You build the bridge that makes it easier to live in a place where things go well, you continually accomplish things, and you stay motivated to move forward towards a better and better life.
When you celebrate an accomplishment, your body releases dopamine and floods you with pleasure. This creates a desire to do more, have more, be more…in essence it gives you motivation. Every time you have a celebration, your mind and body say “YES! Let’s do more of that!” and your confidence lifts.
When you put yourself down or dwell on a “failure”, your body inhibits the release of dopamine. This creates the desire to do less…it’s anti-motivational. Each time you act negatively about your progress, your mind and body say, “Why bother?” and your confidence lowers.
When you ignore your accomplishments, your body does not react one way or the other. This creates no desire whatsoever. Your mind and body say, “Ho-hum, it’s just another day.” Not very motivational or confidence building.
