Embracing Uncertainty on the Path to Your BIG Dream
New Years brings a lot of ideas. Ideas about what you want to accomplish, habits you want to gain, and where you want to go in life. The transition into a new year can also bring a lot of anxiety as you begin to face what could be daunting tasks and the uncertainty of what lies ahead.
Change can be hard, but it can also be very exciting. As you go for those accomplishments and habits, things will show up that you didn’t expect. Things you forgot about will suddenly show up and you’ll have to take the time to address them. Those habits you want to instill in yourself will force you to confront those habits you avoid thinking about. And the unpaved road to where you really want to go in life will be filled with easy side roads that lead you straight back to where you are now.
Embracing Uncertainty as the Beginning of Change
There will be obstacles and temptations that will give you plenty of distractions and reasons to stop moving forward. I call these Shift-Storms™.
Shift-Storms are there to help you clear out what no longer works, provide you with plenty of fertilizer for new growth, and give you the space to lay out your ultimate life garden.
Most people look at the storm and think, “Nope, can’t do that! See? Every time I try, the shift hits the fan!” They see the obstacle as a stop sign. They only see the chaos and disruption. They don’t see the good that comes from it all.
When Embracing Uncertainty Feels Like Chaos
Imagine, if you will, an expansive field with grass and weeds growing everywhere. It’s beautiful but not very useful. Then farmers come along and see the potential of the land. They break out the tools and start digging and pulling up all those plants. They grab their horses or oxen, tie them to a big metal blade and start destroying that beautiful field.
Now the field is just a big area of dirt with horse and ox poop, nothing much to look at. But then the farmers come back with seeds and start planting.
As the seeds grow, so does the grass and weeds, so the farmers need to come back in with their tools and dig them out. All the while, keeping the area around the seeds they planted clear and nourished with more sh-tuff from their animals.
Soon there is a glorious garden growing that feeds not only the farmers, but their animals too.
Whenever you make a shift in your life, be that a new habit or a new direction in life, there will be a phase of chaos. This is there to show you what no longer works and how you can look, with a different perspective, to see how things either need to be removed or changed so that what you want in your life works effortlessly.
Trusting the Process While Embracing Uncertainty
When you can look at this chaos as an opportunity, the storm loses its intensity. You’ll see that it’s working FOR you not against you. It’s clearing space for new and wonderful things to show up and taking away the blocks and impediments. These obstacles could be physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual.
It’s up to you to utilize these storms to your advantage. Build the bridge with the wreckage. Create the foundation with the experiences gained. Clean up your side of the street so that the universe knows you’re open for the business of life!
Embracing uncertainty and trusting the process does not mean wandering blindly. It means learning how to read the terrain, understand the storms, and use what shows up to build something meaningful.
