Losing Motivation? Learn How to Keep Coming Back
When things take a long time, it’s natural to feel like you’re losing motivation. There doesn’t seem to be anything that proves things are moving along, improving, or working. Stuff is broken, people aren’t showing up, or things feel like they are in a holding pattern. Same stuff, different day.
This is where instant gratification gets put to the side and dedication gets to show up.
Dedication doesn’t always mean working harder. Sometimes it means pausing to reconnect and reflect. It means acknowledging when energy is ebbing and flowing naturally. Sometimes it means consciously coming back to the thing over and over when you notice that life pulled you away. (Squirrels happen
BIG Dreams don’t happen overnight. They take time, energy, and persistence. When the energy dips it may be that you’re walking up the mountain, gaining ground. When it flows, you’ve entered a plateau or valley, and things just work. All the work of climbing gets you to a place where you can enjoy the view instead of worry about the next step in front of you.
When You’re Losing Motivation, Reconnect With Why You Started
If you find yourself in a space where you’re wondering why you even started up the BIG Dream mountain, take a moment. Reconnect with why it matters. Go back to the you who started this journey.
Where were you?
What was happening?
What were you feeling?
What did you want to change?
Perhaps some things have shifted since then. Perhaps you’ve noticed some things along the way that either confirm or change your path. Ask yourself:
Where are you now?
What is happening?
What are you feeling?
What do you want to change?
Have you dipped back into an old pattern or thought process?
What might this dip be trying to tell or show you?
Consistency Means Coming Back, Not Never Wandering
Remind yourself that you are blazing a new trail in life. If you occasionally step back onto the well-worn highway, that’s normal. It’s an easy walk and we naturally want to be there. It’s a comfortable place to rest. No judgement required. But don’t stay there either.
Building the muscle to climb BIG Dream Mountain takes repetition and practice. Doing small things each day towards the goal. Being willing to take one micro-baby step, move one little thing, create one small strategy keeps the ball rolling however slowly. An object in motion tends to stay in motion.
And when you realize the ball stopped rolling? Give it another push. Consistency doesn't have to mean you never stop. Sometimes it means you keep coming back.
Trust Yourself When Motivation Fades
Be patient with yourself, there may be things that you can’t see that need some love and attention…mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual obstacles within you or just in the world. The dips and pauses can give you information. It’s ok to take the time to review it.
Trust in yourself. Your BIG Dream chose you for a reason.
Be flexible. Sometimes whole worlds need to shift to make things happen.
Life happens. Squirrels happen. Motivation wanes. The dream is still there. And every time you come back to it, more magic happens. You strengthen your bond and willingness to go on this adventure. You pave the road a little more, making it easier to return after a side quest. You’re building the muscle of choice…and you’re choosing YOU.
You don’t have to become the person who never gets distracted, never loses momentum, or never questions the path. You can become the person who knows how to find your way back to yourself.
