Reconnecting With Yourself Through Life’s Shift-Storms™

Feeling disconnected can often be triggered by life changes or internal conflicts, what we call Shift-Storms™.

Sometimes these changes are expected and welcomed, and other times they come out of the blue and wreak unwelcome havoc on your life. It’s in these times that we can fall into despair and wonder “why me?” But they can also be an unexpected opening for reconnecting with yourself.

It takes a twist of perspective to view these happenings as a good opportunity for your life. By shifting your perspective, you don’t discount the facts of what is happening and the disruption it causes, you just shift what it means for you and your future.

Shifting Perspective Toward Reconnecting With Yourself

For example, we once bought a new washer/dryer set, had it installed, but then waited for a couple of days before using it. When we did, we noticed there was water under the set. When they came to see what repair needed to be done, it was discovered that the installers had not tightened down all the water hoses, and the system was continually leaking.

This caused our wood flooring to start buckling and it basically took out our whole kitchen and the adjoining room. Construction for 6 months! The most expensive washer/dryer I think I’ve ever purchased.

For a day or two we were PISSED! Running around the house grumbling and complaining, pulling everything out of the cupboards. But then we started looking at our kitchen and thinking about what we wanted to do with it. We started looking at different materials, additions we wanted to make and dreaming of a kitchen that actually worked for us…all courtesy of the installation company’s insurance.

This shift of perspective from the upheaval and destruction to the new possibilities in store got us excited for the upgrade. Yes, we still had to deal with no kitchen for 6 months and it was a pain in the backside. But we were smiling most of the way through because of what we knew was coming. An amazing kitchen that the whole family now LOVES! (yes, even me...the one who HATES the kitchen area and could easily live without one. 😜 )

By using this technique of looking for what the current upheaval is actually bringing you can shift from the negative to the positive, while still acknowledging that the situation is distracting, unwelcome, and inconvenient.

Discovering Growth and Reconnecting With Yourself

So, how do you “look for the silver lining”? By acknowledging what this “mess” is cleaning up. In our example above, the mess was wooden floors that we had neglected and that were not in the best shape. It was also how the kitchen flowed (which it didn’t) and how we as a family connected (or didn’t connect) within the space.

So, these were all areas in which we were granted the opportunity to clear out what wasn’t working, declutter a bit, and reconnect with who we were both individually and as a group, which is at its heart about reconnecting with yourself. We were able to upgrade our communication, dive deeper into those things we liked, and remove the things we didn’t like with love and compassion. This opportunity, which started out as a complete disaster, led to a more comfortable, inclusive, and loving home.

You know, if you really think about it, most “disasters” end up with upgrades for those involved and a sense of closer community…if you allow them to. It may not be the community you envisioned or expected. It may not be the upgrades you initially thought you wanted. But it’s generally something better than what was before.

Reconnecting With Yourself Through Life’s Disruptions

When you can look at these Shift-Storms as opportunities for improvement, they become less epic, concerning, or anxiety filled. The stress levels diminish and your excitement level rises. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a practice to shift your perspective, but it becomes a fun thing to have the rug pulled out from under you and turn around to look for all the goodies the rug was hiding. It is possible, and it’s one of the most powerful ways of reconnecting with yourself.

Shift-Storms may feel like chaos in the moment, but they carry within them the seeds of reconnection and growth. Each disruption is a chance to clear away what no longer serves you and step into a life that feels more aligned, peaceful, and authentically yours.
