How to Break Big Goals Into Manageable Steps

You know that one big goal you have but can never seem to get anything done on it? There’s a reason for that…it’s called overwhelm. You look at the big picture and think of all the things that go into it and get paralyzed.

Break Big Goals Into Manageable Steps to Overcome Overwhelm

The best way to deal with that overwhelm is to map out all the little steps along the way. Then you can take the small steps and fit them into your day. It may feel like it takes a long time, but it’s so much faster than sitting down and worrying about all the things all the time.

Each little action brings you closer to your intended end goal and builds momentum to keep you moving forward, even when you feel the overwhelm and just want to run screaming from the room.

Getting in motion is the most important part of attaining your BIG Dream. And to do that it takes those micro-baby steps that will help you to achieve the little milestones along the way.

It makes me think of cooking or baking something. First you need the recipe. Once you find the right one, you need to make sure you have all the ingredients. Then you need to make sure you have all the right equipment. Next is figuring out the order of operations…mix dry with dry, wet with wet, then combine the two. Once it’s all together, you stick it in the oven or on the stove and let it cook!

It’s the same with your BIG Dream and the goals.

Break Big Goals Into Manageable Steps Using Milestones

First you need the big picture (the recipe). This is where you start at the end and work your way backwards to find out how to get there. These are your milestones, the markers along the way that show you that progress is being made. They are also the best way to ‘chunk down’ your dream into smaller goals. This allows you to know what needs to be done on a big picture scale but remind yourself that it doesn’t all have to happen RIGHT NOW.

Once you’ve got your BIG Dream picture, it’s time to see what you already have in place and what you need to get started (ingredients). Take a look at the first milestone you have on your list to see if there are any gaps or things that need to be done. Gather all the things you have already and build upon that. Break it down into daily tasks. Then get to work and CELEBRATE these small accomplishments! This is the foundation of your BIG Dream.

Then you start exploring and pulling together the people, places, and things that support you along the way (equipment). As you move along your BIG Dream roadmap, you will find that opportunities and people will come your way. You’ll find tools and support will show up as you need them to help you refine your journey. This is the fuel that will continue to drive your BIG Dream forward.

Break Big Goals Into Manageable Steps by Refining What Works

And here’s where it gets fun…mixing it all together, trying different ways of doing things and seeing what works best (order of operations). Along the way you’ll start to see what works and what doesn’t for you. You’ll refine what and how you’re doing whatever your BIG Dream is. You’ll find things you thought were a part of the dream that when you get into them, you realize they are SO NOT something you want to do…even if you’re good at them. You’ll also find things that you never knew existed that are SO aligned with you and your BIG Dream.

Once you find that right combination, you put it out into the world and watch what happens! Because now you’re cooking with gas! These ideas, people, things will propel you, excite you, and solidify your commitment to your BIG Dream as you continually improve and align your life with your divine spark and BIG Dream. Things will magically fall into place. Opportunities will show themselves. Your life will start looking like what you wanted it to look like back when you first started this journey.

Each of these stages can take some time, probably more time than you think, and come with a fair amount of emotional roller-coaster rides. So, give yourself some grace and compassion. No one hits it out of the park on their first swing…or their 100th. It takes repetition and a willingness to “fail” (or as I like to call it, make mistakes) so that you can learn and pivot along the way. The point is to keep yourself on track with manageable goals that lead to the ultimate BIG Dream.

When you break big goals into manageable steps, something powerful happens, you stop spinning in overwhelm and start building momentum. And momentum is what carries you forward, even on the days when things feel hard.

So instead of asking, “How do I do all of this?” Ask yourself, “What is one small step I can take today?” Then take it. And celebrate it.

If you’re ready to build that kind of momentum consistently, I’ve created something to support you. Download the Accomplishment Record Template so you can track your daily wins, stay focused on what’s working, and keep moving forward, one aligned step at a time.

Because those small steps you take today… They’re the ones that create your BIG Dream. 💃💃💃
