Practice Dreaming Again: Reconnect With What Truly Matters
So many of us spend our time running around doing all the things without a breath for ourselves. We’re so focused on what needs to get done that there doesn’t seem to be time for what WE want. No time to even think about it let alone DO anything about it. And this is when life turns into a “how did I even get here” moment.
We’re so busy doing that we lose sight of the why. We forget the dream we started out with and just saw the pile of responsibilities that had to get done. Shelter, food, clothing, soccer practice, that big project due yesterday, etc.
When You Forget to Practice Dreaming Again
Getting back to that dream we once had feels like an impossible task…If we even remember it. We get that feeling of hopelessness when thinking about what we want, because nothing comes to mind…it’s become a blank slate. And when an idea does happen to pop in, it’s summarily dismissed because there’s no time for it.
Then the ache shows up…but that would have been awesome, if only…
Do yourself a favor, write those ideas down. Just give them a little more time than the one second in, one second dismissed that your brain does. See which one calls to you the most.
This is not to give you a pile of shame for all the things you’ll never do, it’s to give your brain a way to find the space to move forward, if even just a little micro-baby step, into that dream life. To start giving yourself time to practice dreaming again.
Give Yourself Permission to Practice Dreaming Again
Once you start doing this, you’ll begin to see opportunities open up. Small at first, but as you continue the momentum will rise. You’ll start to see when there is time for you and notice things that you’ve prioritized as urgent and important, but that are really just time fillers.
Do you really need to bake ALL the cookies for the high school bake sale?
Do you really need to volunteer for that extra project at work?
You’ll start to reevaluate what’s on your plate and notice where you can release, or rearrange, some activities that will allow you to create some time just for yourself to dream and plan.
This time gives you the opportunity to become strategic with your life. You become purposeful in the actions you take and strategic in the projects you choose.
You don’t have to know the ultimate BIG Dream, but you can see the cookie crumb trail and start to follow it to better understanding.
Practice Dreaming Again Without Needing All the Answers
So, ask yourself, “If time and money were no object, what would you want for your life?” Go BIG on this exercise, because when you do you trick your mind into thinking it’s just a game. 😉 You’ll start to write down the craziest things, but you’ll also start to see a pattern of what’s important to you. The things you include on this “pretend” list will show you a little bit of your future.
Take note of these things, these ideas and concepts, then see if there’s any way to implement a little piece of them into your life today. This will give you the first foundational building blocks to start upgrading your life little by little.
If you put enough grains of sand together, you get your own personal castle.
