Reinvent Your Life: Celebrate the Courage to Begin Again

Sometimes the hardest part of reinvention isn't beginning. It's admitting that the life you've built no longer fits who you've become. You look up from life and, while it looks good from the outside, it’s not what you imagined it would be. So, you start down a new path, something that gives you that familiar feeling of excitement. But then old stories show up saying why you can’t or shouldn’t do something. Some of these old stories come from outside of yourself, but a lot come from within.

I was recently in a business group, and a woman shared her story about taking care of her mother as she passed, which then turned into taking care of her brother as he battled cancer. And then her father fell ill and his caretaking fell to her. She was exhausted, having spent the last 10 or so years putting her life on hold to care for her parents and siblings, because “that’s what good daughters do.”

Her father recently had a stroke and after the initial medical treatment, he wanted to come home. She was never asked if it was ok with her to put her life on hold for everyone else. She has been working on getting her new business off the ground and his current care needs would not allow her to do much of anything else.

The Courage It Takes to Reinvent Your Life

Even though she felt a little guilty, she had the hard conversation with her father. His initial reaction was, “That’s what daughters are supposed to do.” But, after some soul searching, he agreed that she needed to live her life. They were able to set him up so that his needs were met and she is able to pursue her BIG Dream.

Even though we’ve grown as a society, many women still believe that ‘good’ women are supposed to sacrifice their time and energy for the good of the family, no matter how unhealthy, mentally, emotionally, and physically, it may be for us.

These conversations are not easy, and a lot of emotions will show up. To move away from what’s been seen as the ‘good’ daughter, wife, mother, woman can and will cause ripples for everyone. And it can be scary.

Folks may say you’ve disappointed them and that you’re being selfish. It can bring up old feelings of shame and guilt for not bowing to their needs and wants. Just remember, you have a divine spark within, a BIG Dream that wants to be, needs and desires that are just as important as theirs are. You are worthy of having them met…even if it kicks up a little bit of a Shift-Storm™.

What Becomes Possible When You Choose a New Path

But after the dust settles and the sea calms, amazing things show up. Better relationships, feeling aligned and empowered, and a life that fits YOU. And in the end, this benefits all who surround you…whether they know it or not.

Know that, even though you’re making changes, the you that came before isn’t less than. She got you here. She learned the lessons and went through the experiences so that you could stand in this place of strength and courage…this space of choosing something different and new…this space of reinvention. How awesome is she?

When you turn to something new, change your direction, and rediscover yourself, celebrate that moment. Celebrate the moment you have the hard conversation. Celebrate the moment you make a decision that not only serves you but also serves the growth of those around you.
