Small Daily Rituals to Remember Yourself Again
Sometimes life can really take over and leave us exhausted and dissociated from who we are and what we really want in life. It takes some self-care and building of habits to bring us back to alignment within ourselves.
Luckily, there are small daily rituals you can do, with intention, to remind yourself of who you are and what you want to do in life. Some may seem silly, but are very valuable in reconnecting to yourself.
Reconnect Through Small Daily Rituals
Recently I’ve been asked about teaching people to dance. This is one of my go-to things to bring me back to myself when life starts to feel overwhelming.
My response is, “You already know how to dance.”
The human body is built to dance and move. What happens is that society makes a decision on what “dance” is and then tells all who cannot do it that they cannot dance. We then stop moving and get ashamed if and when we do move because it’s not “real dancing”.
The way I dance may not look like the way you dance, but we can all dance. I was walking in the forest with a woman once and she asked me to show her some dance steps. So I showed her a couple of moves that I do and her response was, “I can’t do that!” To which I replied, "That’s ok, do your own!” I then asked her to just move in a way that felt good in her body. She started moving her arms and making little steps. I looked at her and said, “You’re dancing.”
Where I had moved my hips and made large steps, she felt better with little steps and arm movements. I went in circles, she went back and forth. Very different movements, but movement, nonetheless. And to her it felt comfortable and easy. She had a different beat and expression in her body than I had in mine…and it was beautiful.
Small Daily Rituals Help You Remember Yourself
Dancing is just one way to realign yourself, and it doesn’t need to look like the Prima Ballerina from the New York Ballet or J-Lo on her big concert stage. It could be a simple 10-Second Bootie Wiggle™ in the parking lot after grocery shopping.
It could also be:
A quiet cup of something warm in the morning, taking a moment to connect with your BIG Dream and assess the day before getting it all started.
Journaling in the evening as a reassessment of the day to see where things got a little sideways or off track.
Taking a short road trip to the next town and back.
Doodling interesting doodles.
A skincare routine
Turning on your favorite music
Each one of these types of activities gives you the precious moments to realign yourself to who you are, and want to be, and your BIG Dream. They remind you of who you are inside and allow you to bring that amazing person to the forefront as you go on with your day and deal with life’s responsibilities and occasional dumpster fires.
Create Small Daily Rituals That Bring You Home
What are the small activities that make you feel more in line with yourself?
Make a list of them and see where you can implement them in your day. I’ll bet that when you do, life will start to feel like it’s going your way…even if it goes sideways at first. Keep doing the little things. They build into the foundation that creates your life and brings your BIG Dream into being.
This foundation will keep you aligned with, and reminded of, you. And when you’re in alignment with yourself, life feels more energizing and fun…even through the hard times.
You don't have to completely reinvent yourself to reconnect with who you are. More often than not, it begins with one small daily ritual. A favorite song. A quiet cup of tea before the world wakes up. A short drive with the windows down. A page in your journal. A 10-Second Bootie Wiggle™. These intentional moments become the foundation that keeps you aligned with yourself, reminding you of who you've always been, even when life gets busy.
If you're ready to reconnect even more deeply with the dreams that have been quietly waiting beneath the busyness of everyday life, I'd love to invite you to download my BIG Dream Visualization. It's a gentle guided experience designed to help you quiet the noise, reconnect with yourself, and rediscover the BIG Dream that's been patiently waiting inside you. Sometimes all it takes is a few intentional minutes to remember what's always been there.
